Program Note:
Though I predominantly identify as a composer, I continue to maintain a fondness for my primary instrument, the marimba. Before Opposing Currents, it had been quite some time since I had written a piece for marimba, and it was a pleasure returning to my musical roots. As the title suggests, flowing water inspired the musical materials of Opposing Currents. The first movement, Undertow, is reminiscent of the perilous downward pull of whitewater in a surging river. The gentle flow of the final movement, Stream, serves as a peaceful counterpart to the aggression of the first. Interlude, while too short to be considered a full movement on its own, creates a bridge between the outer movements. Both Undertow and Stream may be performed separately as standalone pieces, or all three movements may be performed together as a suite.
